Joseph and Catherine came to Australia on the "Agricola" arriving in Sydney on the 26/2/1853.
They first lived at Glebe and Joseph had a stall at the HayMarket.Joseph purchased land in
Marrickville.His estate was from Marrickville Road to Sydenham Road and Livingston Road to Petersham Road.He built a 25 room 2 story house featuring imposing balconies and imported cedar.The estate was named "Lilydale",and was a professional nursery.After his death the estate was subdivided and the house became a girls boarding school,Lynwood Ladies College.
The house was demolished about 1917.Joseph was elected to Marrickville council in 1868 and remained on it till his death.He was elected Mayor 9 times.He was a very busy man and belonged to a number of organizations,National Parks,Wildlife,Metropolitan Water Sewage and Drainage Board,Royal Horticultural Society,Sydney Hospital Board,Benevolant Society of NSW,The Deaf and Blind Society,Sydney Highland Society and a sitting Justice at the Sydney Waterboard.Joseph's funeral was one of the largest ever seen at Marrickville being over a mile long with over 900 mourners,with long reports in the daily papers.Sir Henry Parks was a close friend of Joseph and wanted him to be part of Australias Federation,Joseph declined that offer.
