Hi Trevor Scottish Immigrants to Tasmania
My friend in Scotland sent me your article re Scots who immirated to Australia.
My GGG Grandparents,David & Janet Wylie (Wyllie),immigrated to Tasmania from Fife,Scotland aboard the "Panama" in 1853.
In 1857,their son William Wylie and his wife Isabella (nee Adams) followed them to Tasmania.
The families were "Bounty immigrants".
"Panama" 1853
The 733 ton American built ship "Panama" sailed from Liverpool,England on 8th January 1853 and arrived Hobart Town on 27th April 1853.Captained by Master Thomas Leich,the Surgeon was Thomas Parr Esq and it carried Captain Leich's wife and general cargo.In Steerage were assisted immigrants comprising of 108 married couples;24 single adult males and 71 single adult females;36 boys and 49 girls under the age of 14.Five infants died on the passage.
The entry in "Fife Emigrants and their Ships" reads as follows ;
Wylie,David;from Fife;m Forgan 1821,Janet mcQueen (1798-1880) of Strathmiglo,dau of William McQueen,and couple,with yr.children arrived Hobart on the "Panama" 27th April 1853,followed by their sons,William and David (and their families) on the "Great Tasmania" 27th January 1857;farmer at Bothwell.
William and Isabella Wylie (nee Adam/s) departed for Australia from Liverpool,England aboard the ship "Great Tasmania" on 14th November 1858,with their children;
David aged 11,Richard Adams aged 9,Alexander aged 6,Ellen aged 5 and William aged 2.A daughter Jane was born on the vessel 10th Jan 1857.
Alexander died of influenza while aboard the vessel,on the 13th January 1857,3 days after his sister Jane was born,and 14 days from Hobart.
The name is incorrect on list of deaths aboard ship as it states Richard died,not Alexander.They arrived in Tasmania on 27th January 1857.

Highlands and Islands Emigration Society
Between 1852 and 1857,the Highlands and Islands emigration Society assisted almost 5000 individuals to leave western Scotland for Australia.
We have selected the following popular sources from the National Archives of Scotland's Highland Destitution series (HD) to help you find out more about the scheme.
1852-1857 Highlands and Islands Emigration Society Passenger Lists
The Highland and Islands Emigration Society was set up by private subscription to alleviate destitution in the Highlands by promoting and assisting the emigration of Highlanders to Australia.Their passenger lists for the years 1852-1857 have survived and are organised by ship and family and record the name,age and residence of each emigrant,as well as occasional notes on their health and situation.This is one of the few sources for emigration held by the National Archives of Scotland.

Dear Trevor
I am researching my parent's ancestors;my mother's family emigrated in 1833 from Clackmannanshire.One family member has a comprehensive family tree;of which I have a paper copy.On ancestry.com I have some information but I am more interested in researching back beyond 1833,so have not yet entered all info from the paper copy.
I gather from an ancestry.com contact that the McGregor clan has some sort of blight on it's name,my mother's family were Greig's.I wonder if you have information on this.
In what sort of format did you want to receive family tree info-electroni or paper and which generations are you interested in,current or previous?

To Trevor Smurthwaite
I saw your letter in the paper "Messenger" .Enclosed is info about John McKinlay "The forgotten explorer".
John McKinlay went looking for Burke and Wills from South Australia.He continued on exploring outback Australia and probably went twice as far as Burke and Wills ever did.Queensland has a town named McKinlay and a River named McKinlay.
Our new road is being constructed the northern expressway north of Adelaide.It would only be a few minutes from McKinlay's grave site.
Why not call this new highway the "John McKinlay Highway".
I wonder if John McKinlay has relations in Australia alive?
