Hello Trevor Clan Histories.
I note in your letter in the local issue of our local paper "The Messenger" in which you outline your plans to create greater interest in the Scottish/Australian connection, and the need to preserve historical data for posterity.I commend you for your apparent enthusiasm, and wish you luck in the venture.
I am a 76 year-old Scot now living in South Australia.I spent the last 70 years of my life in Scotland (Dunbartonshire) during which time I have been an ardent student of Scottish history-especially Highland history, although I am not a native Gaelic speaker.Currently I am President of the Clan MacFarlane Society,Australia inc,in which I concentrate of clan research and edit and produce our newsletter "MacFarlane's lantern" in spite of my surname,I do have many MacFarlanes up my family tree,as it were, some of which date back to the late 16th century.I also represent our clan as a delegate in the Scottish Associations of South Australia Inc (SASA).
Since coming to Australia,I have been interested in the Australian/Scottish cultural exchange, although I have to admit it is sometimes very difficult to obtain written data from Aussies with Scottish backgrounds.
I have no idea of your own specific qualifications in this field, although you say you are a direct descendant of King Robert the Bruce 1 (The Bruce),which means that you must also be related to the present Lord Elgin,Chief of the Bruce family. However,by way of an introduction on my part,I have taken the opportunity in attatching here one of several articles written by me and on the subject of Scottish clan history, which might be of interest to you.(On our main index).
Letter kindly submitted by; Malcolm Lobban,President of the Clan MacFarlane Society of Australia Inc.

Hello Trevor smurthwaite
I was very exited to read your article,as I have spent much time dreaming of pehaps being able to connect with some of my origins and find the place where granddad came from.I know he was of the Stewart Clan. His name was James Riddell and he fought in the war and was badly injured by being gassed
He used his mums maiden name of Sheriden and came to Australia and raised 6 or 7 children. His brothers came over too and one was a shipbuilder another a solicitor.I'm hoping to be able to learn about what part of Scotland he came from, but if not it will still be fun trying to find out.

Dear Budding Historian Trevor
A word of explanation why this air mail please excuse poor typing but this typewriter, and an ordinary BT phone is our only update. My handwriting is pretty bad now for an early octogenarian I am not sure when I read your appeal in our local paper well before christmas I think.Decided to reply soon after New Year then I mislaid your notice in the paper.Found it today.I do not know of any relatives I have in Australia, but my wife has, don't think they will mind you getting in contact, have not told them so will come as a suprise.
We correspond regularly with my wifes cousin namely Mrs Marjorie Cameron Davis.
Marjorie's father and my my wifes father were brothers, her dad John or Jock MacMillan emigrated to Australia,I think sometime in the twenties, older brother Sandy sometimes Marjory knows more about Isobels cousins ect, than she does.
Marjories husband is a retired canon of Anglican Church in Australia Peter Hassall Davies, some years ago he told us that he was a third generation Australian. His great grandfather Duncan MacDonald emigrated with his wife and two brothers emigrated to Australia in 1859.I tried at Glasgow research room to find out ship and passenger list, then they told me records there did not go so far back although I was able to out a lot of Isobels father and his father came down from Glasgow area when her dad was a young boy.Peters only brother came back to Scotland in sixties,I think he was an organist and choir member younger than Peter, sadly died in England in Nov 2009.
Further to the above; Marjories late sister Christine who died in year 49 was married to Francis Augustine Cleary of Irish descent in the mid nineties. They both toured Europe and visited my wife in Paisley made a good bond between us and family news etc.
Some years ago I did some background research on the name Cleary of Irish descent goes back hundreds of years.
